*** Chiefs 2018 Offseason Thread ***

According to Spotrac his market value is about $9.4M a year. That's obviously out of the Chiefs budget. He's a little bit of a special case though.

One of the first things Dez did as a free agent was turn down an offer from the Baltimore Ravens. Maybe he was using their interest to help set the market.

Jason Witten said in an interview he thought Dez would sign with the Packers. It doesn't seem like that's going to happen, but that tells you Dez was telling Witen that, so Dez is likely looking for a competitive team, hence turning down the Ravens and showing interest in the Packers who with Aaron Rodgers healthy should be a SB contender.

The outside perception is the Chiefs will take a step back with Mahomes being a first year starter, but otherwise they were a competitor. Hard to say how Dez will view the Chiefs.

I'd say $9M/year is out the window. Too many teams don't have extra money lying around after the draft, so this late in the process the market should be down. I'm going to guess around $4-6M on a prove it deal, but I don't think the Chiefs should pursue him anyway. Conley, Chesson, and DRob are all young guys on rookie contracts that can yet prove themselves a capable slot receiver.

I'm generally not big on signing players who's performance is in freefall decline.

And one who is a headcase, to put it nicely.

It might be just me, but it seemed like Dez drops the ball too often.

Pure blind luck... it's been protecting children from fire for centuries!

Literally and figuratively.

I mean, how many meetings did he skip while in Dallas?

I've heard it was over 100 during his career.

So much for any of the people that want him to teach Hill, Watkins, and the rest of the crew how to be a pro.

NFL.com: Ten NFL streaks that will (or won't) be snapped in 2018 season

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...018-season

Quote:THE STREAK: The Kansas City Chiefs have won 10-plus games in three straight seasons.

Will it live?
No.

Why?
Listen, I'm as excited about Patrick Mahomes as the next guy. But you have four games against two potential top-five defenses in the Chargers and Broncos. Kansas City's D wasn't great last year when it had Marcus Peters, so I'm not looking for the unit to improve without the stud corner. I expect the Chiefs' offense to be a fantasy delight, but it will end up on the losing end of a lot of shootouts.

Last year the Chiefs averaged 33 points against those defenses. Denver is getting old save for adding Chubb and the Chargers are overrated to begin with (remember, 4.9 yards per carry allowed, most in the NFL).

One of the more hilarious but common things I've seen is Roby will be an improvement on Talib. No one would think this if Roby weren't a 1st round pick in 2014. He has 6 INTs in 4 years. "But he played behind 2 guys" is not excuse at CB where most teams basically start a nickel back any more.

I will also say people exaggerate the difference between Marcus Peters and Kendall Fuller. Fuller is a hell of a young corner. Is he as good as Peters? Probably not and his game is totally different, but the way this meme gets told over and over you'd think the Chiefs didn't even attempt to replace Peters. Getting Berry back from injury is huge too.

I agree the Chiefs defense was awful last year, but they very quietly turned the whole damn thing over this offseason. I know normally this is a mistake that a lot of fans make, simply listing off the changes the teams has made with the assumption that they're all going to be improvements. That's not my point.

My point is personnel wise this is not the same defense. Including guys returning from injury, that's about a dozen key role players and multiple starters that will be different from last year on top of changes in depth. There will be some growing pains from the younglings and some of the veterans might not pan out, but to simply mention the Chiefs defense "wasn't great" last year and therefore won't be this year is lazy.
